To complete a doctoral programme a doctoral student must:

  • receive passing grades and credits for all modules;
  • document their publication record in the form of at least 1 scientific article in a peer-reviewed journal, an international conference proceedings or 1 monograph;
  • obtain a positive opinion on the dissertation from the supervisor(s);
  • submit the dissertation together with the opinion of the supervisor(s) to the office of the doctoral school;
  • submit an annual report.

Text of instruction: 1. Submitting to the IEDS office two copies of the doctoral dissertation and the supervisors’ opinions of the disertation. The title of the disertation must be the same os the one proposed in the IRP. 2. The IEDS Council’s approval of the dissertation granted during the earliest meeting. The documents must be submitted at least one week before the scheduled Council meeting. Once the dissertation has been approved by the Council, it is not possible to make any changes to the dissertation. 3. Once the dissertation has been accepted, the doctoral student is given a certificate confirming completion of the doctoral school and achievement of and achievement of the learning outcomes at the level of 8 PQF. 4. The initiating of the procedure for granting the doctoral degree is carried out by the individual institutes irrespective of the doctoral school. To apply for granting a doctoral degree, a graduate of the IEDS must contact the administration of the relevant institute.The initiation of the procedure for the awarding a doctoral degree takes place at the supervising unit (faculties of the University of Silesia in Katowice, Institute of Geophysics PAN, Institute of Oceanology PAN, Institute of Mathematics PAN), not at the Doctoral School. Before submitting the dissertation and completing the education, the doctoral student is obliged to find out what the requirements and standards are for initiating the procedure at the given unit!

The details of completing the education at doctoral school are specified in RULES AND REGULATIONS of the International Environmental Doctoral School associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice (from October 1, 2024) and article 205 of the Higher Education and Science Law Act of 27 July 2018 (consolidated text: Journal of Laws of 2023, item 742, as amended) and article 290(3) of the Implementing Provisions of 3 July 2018 of the Higher Education and Science Law Act (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1669, as amended).
