Admission to the International Environmental Doctoral School (IEDS) associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice is in accordance with Resolution No. 352 of the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice passed on 24 January 2023 concerning admission requirements and mode of recruitment.

Requirements to enter qualification procedure

Participation in the recruitment procedure to IEDS is open to a person who within the period consistent with the schedule:

  • has opened up an account at the irk2.us.edu.pl and completed the registration form;
  • has paid the recruitment fee in the amount of PLN 300.

A candidate applying for admission to IEDS must submit:

  • application form —personal questionnaire for admission to IEDS;
  • curriculum vitae;
  • ORCID number;
  • information regarding the scientific discipline or disciplines, in the case of interdisciplinary work, in which the candidate intends to prepare a doctoral dissertation;
  • consents and declarations required in the irk2.us.edu.pl system;
  • a copy of the diploma of completion of master’s studies together with a supplement, or other document entitling to take up education at the doctoral school I accordance with 8 (5) (6) – (7);
  • an outline of the doctoral project, a list of the candidate’s scientific achievements in a given discipline in which implementation of the doctoral dissertation is planned and the documents confirming scientific achievements as well as other documents specified in the criteria for recruitment (the documents may also be submitted in the IEDS office or sent to polarknow@us.edu.pl or via the website).

Stages of the qualification procedure

1. Assessment of the PhD project outline (max. 40 points). Candidates who have submitted an outline of the doctoral project together with the supervisor’s opinion within the time specified in the schedule and obtained above 20 points are admitted to further proceedings.
2. Assessment of documented scientific achievements (max. 20 points). Candidates who have submitted the scientific achievements form within the time specified in the schedule will be admitted to further proceedings.
3. Qualification interview (max. 40 points). A candidate who does not enter the interview or receives less than 20 points will not be admitted.

Schedule
  • June 27, 2023 — opening an online registration for candidates through the online candidate registration system (irk2.us.edu.pl).
  • August, 25 20232 — closing of online registration for candidates.
  • September 1, 2023 — deadline for submitting the outline of the doctoral project, list of candidate’s scientific achievements form, documents confirming scientific achievements and other documents.
  • September 7, 2023 – evaluation of the outline of doctoral projects (1 st stage of the recruitment procedure) and assessment of the scientific achievements of the candidates (2nd stage of the recruitment procedure) by the recruitment committee.
  • September 8, 2023 – providing candidates with information about the results of the 1st and 2nd stage of recruitment and the admission or non-admission interviews, as well as notification of the date and place of interviews.
  • September 11-13, 2023 – interviews with candidates (3rd stage of the recruitment procedure).
  • September 15, 2023 – notification of candidates about the recruitment results.
  • September 18-21, 2023 – receiving documents from candidates qualified for admission and entering them on the list of doctoral students.
  • September 22, 2023 – notification of admission to candidates on the reserve list.
  • September 25-28, 2023 – receiving documents from candidates qualified for admission from the reserve list and entering them on the list of doctoral students.
  • September 29, 2023 – the date of announcing the results of the recruitment procedure on the IEDS website.

Admission to IEDS
  • The maximum number of admitted candidates is 12 (excluding those whose studies will be financed from external sources).
  • Education in the first year at IEDS will be started provided that at least 3 candidates are qualified for admission no later than September 30, 2023.
  • Based on the results obtained by the candidates in the recruitment procedure, the recruitment committee creates a ranking list. It determines the order of admitting candidates to the doctoral school within the limit of places.
  • IEDS admission committee specifies the minimum point limit for admission of candidates from ranking lists.
  • A doctoral student who does not hold a degree of doctor shall receive a doctoral scholarship in accordance with Article 209 of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science.

  • The admission committee includes representatives of the entities jointly running the IEDS. All committee members hold the academic rank of a Professor or a post-doctoral degree (PhD with Habilitation).
