Admission to the International Environmental Doctoral School (IEDS) associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice is in accordance with Resolution No. 228 of the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice passed on 25 January 2022 concerning recruitment requirements and mode of recruitment.

Recruitment will be conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Regulations on awarding NCN scholarships in research projects financed by the National Science Center, introduced by the resolution of the Council of the National Science Center No. 25/2019 of 14 March 2019, and in accordance with the rules applicable in this entity. The recruitment committee shall evaluate the candidates’ research achievements, their research-related achievements, and competencies as regards specific tasks in the research project, expressed as a point score:

– 3 points – significant (scholarships, fellowships at good Polish and foreign research centers, national prizes or awards, domestic or foreign workshops or training courses, participation in Polish or foreign projects);
– 2 points – moderate (local prizes or awards, workshops or training courses, participation in university projects);
– 1 point – poor achievements;
– 0 points – no achievements.

During the evaluation of the candidate’s scientific achievements, as well as achievements resulting from conducting scientific research, scholarships, awards and scientific experience gained in the country or abroad, workshops and scientific training, participation in research projects, only those achievements and activities of the candidate will be taken into account, which contributed to the improvement of competences to fulfill the tasks in the research project, or confirms such competences.

2. Conditions for admission to the qualification procedure
To enter the qualification procedure, each candidate must:

3. Schedule
- October 24, 2022 — opening online registration for candidates through the online candidate registration system – OAS (https://irk2.us.edu.pl/).
- November 18, 2022 — closing of online registration for candidates.
- November 18, 2022 — deadline for submitting the outline of the doctoral project, the candidate’s scientific achievements form, and documents confirming scientific achievements and other documents.
- November 21-23, 2022 – evaluation of the outline of doctoral projects (1 st stage of the recruitment procedure) and assessment of the scientific achievements of the candidates (2 nd stage of the recruitment procedure) by experts of the recruitment committee.
- November 24, 2022 – provision of information on the results of the 1st and 2nd stage of recruitment and the admission or not admission interviews, as well as notification of the date and place of interviews.
- December 1, 2022 – interviews with candidates (3rd stage of the recruitment procedure).
- December 2, 2022 – notification of candidates about the recruitment results.
- December 5-9, 2022 – receiving documents from candidates qualified for admission and entering them on the list of doctoral students.
- December 12, 2022 – notification of admission to candidates on the reserve list.
- December 13-16, 2022 – receiving documents from candidates qualified for admission from the reserve list and entering them on the list of doctoral students.

4. Scholarship
The planned amount of the scholarship during the first 30 months of the PhD project is PLN 5,000 gross, which is approximately PLN 3,690 net. The scholarship will be financed under the NCN (National Science Centre, Poland) no. 2021/41/B/ST10/03660 “Spatial representativeness of aerosol profiles, holistic multi-instrument approach”. During the remaining part of the doctoral studies the PhD student receives a scholarship according to the Act of 20th July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science.
The NCN-funded scholarship consists of 1. the doctoral scholarship in accordance with the Act of 20th July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science and 2. The NCN scholarship detailed in Regulations for awarding NCN scholarships for NCN-funded research projects:

Candidates will be evaluated by the IEDS Recruitment Committee, described in §7 (10) of the Resolution No. 228 of the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice passed on 25 January 2022 concerning admission requirements and mode of recruitment. The evaluation procedure consists of 2 stages:
STAGE I – evaluation of submitted information/documents
Candidates who have submitted the form of scientific achievements in accordance with the recruitment schedule are admitted to this stage of evaluation. The form of scientific achievements of the candidate will be made available through the IEDS website.
STAGE II – interviews with candidates
The interview assesses general candidate qualifications and knowledge in the scope of the discipline in which the doctoral dissertation will be completed, knowledge of English, as well as motivation and aptitude to conduct scientific work. During the interviews, candidates will be required to present 10-minute presentations about their achievements to date and their strengths in the context of the PhD studies.
The recruitment committee evaluates candidate’s achievements and competence to carry out specific tasks in the research project on a point scale, according to §3 (12) of the Regulations for awarding NCN scholarships for NCN-funded research project:

The committee will only consider these qualifications and activities that are related to the PhD project.
Candidates who receive less than 50% of maximum available points cannot be admitted. For this reason, the commission may decide not to accept any of the candidates and announce another recruitment under the same conditions.

4. Scholarship
The planned amount of the scholarship during the first 24 months of the PhD project is PLN 5,000 gross, which is approximately PLN 3,690 net. The scholarship will be financed under the NCN (National Science Centre, Poland) SONATA project: Studying glacier calving fluxes and calving styles through a novel combination of acoustic and optical methods. During the remaining part of the doctoral studies the PhD student receives a scholarship according to the Act of 20th July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science.
