Admission to the International Environmental Doctoral School (IEDS) associated with the Centre for Polar Studies at the University of Silesia in Katowice is in accordance with Resolution No. 493 of the Senate of the University of Silesia in Katowice passed on 23 January 2024 concerning admission requirements and mode of recruitment.

- Requirements to admission
The recruitment will be carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Rules and Regulations for granting NCN research scholarships in research projects financed from the funds of the National Science Centre introduced by Resolution of the Council of the National Science Centre No. 124/2022 of 1 December 2022, and in accordance with the rules in force in this Entity. On the basis of the submitted list of scientific achievements and the conducted admission interview, the recruitment committee grants:
- the candidate’s scientific achievements, including publications in renown publishing houses/scientific journals (50% of the final assessment):
– 4 points – extraordinary;
– 3 points – very good;
– 2 points – good;
– 1 point – poor;
– 0 points – no scientific achievements.
- achievements resulting from conducting scientific research, scholarships, awards and scientific experience gained at home or abroad, scientific workshops and training, participation in research projects (20% of the final assessment):
– 4 points – outstanding achievements (including scholarships, internships in leading foreign centers, prestigious international awards or distinctions, workshops or training in leading scientific centers, participation in international or foreign projects);
– 3 points – major achievements (scholarships, internships in good domestic and foreign centers, national awards or prizes, workshops or training abroad or nationwide, participation in domestic or foreign projects);
– 2 points – moderate achievements (local awards or prizes, workshops or training, participation in university projects);
– 1 point – minor achievements;
– 0 points – no achievements.

- Conditions for admission to the qualification procedure
In order to participate in the admission process for the IEDS, before the deadline set out in the schedule, the candidate must:

- create an account in the irk2.us.edu.pl system and completed the registration form relevant declarations and consents;
- pay a recruitment fee of PLN 400;
- The research proposal with the form with the list of the scientific achievements and documents certifying the achievements, as well as other documents specified in the recruitment criteria should be submitted to the IEDS, via polarknow@us.edu.pl within the recruitment schedule
A person applying for admission to the IEDS must submit:
- application for admission to the IEDS (personal questionnaire);
- curriculum vitae;
- ORCID number;
- information about the scientific discipline or disciplines, in the case of interdisciplinary work, in which the candidate intends to prepare a dissertation;
- consents and statements required in the IRK system;
- a copy of the master’s degree diploma together with a supplement or other document entitling to undertake education at a doctoral school in accordance with Section 8 (5) (6) and 8 (5) (7);

- Conditions for granting the scholarship
- The scholarship (before the mid-term evaluation) of PLN 5,000 gross for the first 36 months of education at the doctoral school will be financed from the funds for the implementation of the project 2023/50/E/ST10/00432 entitled „Landslide, debris flow, and flash flood (LaDeFloFF) events in Northern Vietnam under changing climate conditions and human impact” run by dr hab. Łukasz Pawlik and consists of a scientific scholarship and a doctoral scholarship as specified in Article 209 of the Act on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018.
- For the remaining 12 months of education at the doctoral school, a doctoral student without a doctoral degree shall receive a doctoral scholarship in accordance with Article 209 of the Act of 20 July 2018 of Law on Higher Education and Science.

- The amount of the stipend is 5000 PLN gross for the first 42 months of training in the doctoral school will be financed from the funds for the project 2023/50/E/ST10/00432 entitled Improving the palaeoseismological record by multi-method analysis of cave deformation tested in different Hellenid tectonic regimes, directed by Dr. Jacek Szczygiel, Prof. UŚ, and consists of a doctoral stipend in accordance with Art. 209 of the Law on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018 and a research stipend.

- The scholarship (before the mid-term evaluation) of PLN 5,000 gross for the first 24 months of education at the doctoral school will be financed from the funds for the implementation of the National Science Centre SONATA No. 2023/51/D/ST10/00228 entitled „Erosion of the Cliffs along the rocky coasts of the Baltic Sea: observations, reconstructions, predictions” and consists of a scientific scholarship and a doctoral scholarship as specified in Article 209 of the Act on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018.
- The amount of the scholarship for the first 6 months after the mid-term evaluation will amount to PLN 6,500 gross and will be financed from the funds for the implementation of the National Science Centre SONATA No. 2023/51/D/ST10/00228 entitled „Erosion of the Cliffs along the rocky coasts of the Baltic Sea: observations, reconstructions, predictions and consists of a scientific scholarship and a doctoral scholarship as specified in Article 209 of the Act on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018.

The Admission Committee evaluates the candidate on the basis of the documents submitted in the IRK system and the admission interview, according to the following criteria:
- previous academic achievements (including Master’s thesis) thematically connected with the proposed doctoral project (max. 60 points);
- grades obtained in during the Master’s studies (on the basis of the supplement to the Master’s diploma and the final mark) ( max. 30 points);
- English language proficiency ( max. 10 points).
2. Conditions for admission to the qualification procedure
- create a personal account in irk2.us.edu.pl and fill a form containing relevant declarations and consents;
- submitting through irk2.us.edu.pl the following documents: an authorized copy of master’s degree along with the supplement; curriculum vitae
- Candidate can be of any nationality but must not have resided or carried out their
main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting organization for more
than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date
3. Schedule
- 24 May 2024 – opening of registration in the online candidate registration system (hereafter IRK).
- 6 June 2024 – closing of the registration of candidates in IRK, up to this date the candidate must creating an account in the IRK online recruitment system, paying the recruitment fee (the date of transfer is decisive) and entering the required information and documents.
- 7 June 2024 – notifying to candidates via e-mail about the date and place of interviews to the e-mail addresses provided in the IRK system.
- 10 June 2024 – interviews with candidates.
- 11 June 2024 – notifying candidates about results of the recruitment.
- 12-14 June 2024 – submitting the required documents by candidates qualified for admission and enrolment on the list of PhD students.
- 17 June 2024 – notifying candidates on the reserve list about their eligibility for admission.
- 18-21 June 2024 – submitting the required documents from candidates qualified for admission by the reserve list and enrolment on the list of PhD students.
- 13 September 2024 – deadline for publication of the results of the admission procedure on the IEDS website.
4. Scholarship
During education at a doctoral school, a doctoral student who does not hold a doctoral degree shall receive a doctoral scholarship in accordance with Article 209 of the Act of 20 July 2018 Law on Higher Education and Science, with the proviso that a doctoral scholarship shall not be awarded to a doctoral student whose education at a doctoral school involves an obligation to be employed at the entity providing the doctoral school:
1) under a contract of employment;
2) with a salary that exceeds that of a professor (Article 209, paragraph 1a of the Act of 20 July 2018 Law on Higher Education and Science).
